How to apply for State Pension (Contributory)

These are the forms linked from the official page for State Pension (Contributory). Read the name carefully — some payments have separate forms for a first claim, a repeat claim or a supporting medical report.

You may also be able to apply online through MyWelfare, which is usually faster than posting a form.

What you will need

  • Your PPS number.
  • Proof of identity and, usually, proof of address.
  • Any supporting documents the form names — medical reports, payslips or bank statements, depending on the payment.
  • Details of your PRSI record are checked by the Department — you do not need to supply them yourself.

The official page for State Pension (Contributory) lists no dedicated office. Contact your local Intreo Centre or Citizens Information Centre. Find your local Intreo Centre.

After you apply

  • Processing takes time. If you are left without income while you wait, you can apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance in the meantime.
  • If you are refused, you can appeal — but you have only 60 days from the date on the decision letter.
  • Tell the Department if your circumstances change, as it can affect what you are entitled to.
